Satellite Internet

TRAI will soon allocate spectrum to start satellite internet service in India. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has made preparations for this. TRAI has sought suggestions from stakeholders on pricing, spectrum allocation etc. For the past two years, Elon Musk’s Starlink company has been at the forefront of the race for satellite internet service in India. Meanwhile, leading telecom companies Airtel and Jio have also geared up for satellite internet service.

Elon Musk is late to the race

Service providers are not prepared to start their services until the spectrum allocation process is completed. Elon Musk’s Starlink company had applied to start satellite internet service in India in October 2022 itself. Meanwhile, another foreign company called Amazon intends to launch satellite internet service in the Indian market. However, these two foreign companies seem to be lagging behind in this race.

Jio and Airtel have made preparations

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given approval to Airtel’s Eutelsat Oneweb and Jio’s satellite internet service SES to start services. They just have to wait for the spectrum to be allocated. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Amazon have yet to complete security-related compliance. The Department of Transport has written a letter to these two companies regarding this matter. Furthermore, the Department of Communications will also send reminders to these companies if compliance is not completed.

Satellite Internet is the silver bullet

Recently, Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal described satellite internet as a silver bullet. Through this we will be able to connect any area of the country to the Internet, says Sunil Mittal. Especially in those remote areas where even the landline mobile network has not reached. 2 billion people in the world are still deprived of Internet service. In such a situation, it is considered a very important technology for the future. With the launch of satellite internet service, telecom operators will be able to provide the network to every region in the country.

At present, there are 20 to 25 percent of the areas in the country where people do not get proper internet connectivity. In such a situation, satellite internet has become their only solution. The government is involved in infrastructure development in the country under the Ghatishakti Scheme. Satellite Internet service is also an important link to this scheme. With the launch of the service, internet service will also reach 5% of Indians who currently live outside the internet service area.
