WhatsApp has once again taken major action and blocked the accounts of more than 85 lakh Indian users. The action was taken by Meta’s instant messaging platform in September. This information was shared by the company in its monthly compliance report issued under the New IT Rule 2021. WhatsApp said that in the month of September, 16.58 million accounts were blocked proactively, meaning action was taken on these accounts without any user reporting them.
Action under IT Rule 2021
In its compliance report, the instant messaging platform said that in September it received a total of 8,161 complaints, of which WhatsApp took action on 97 complaints. Apart from this, Meta also informed that it has received two orders from the Grievance Appeal Committee, on which action has been taken. The company has issued its compliance report every month since 2021, which contains information about blocked accounts and action taken.
As per the new IT Rule 2021, all social media platforms based in India (having more than 50 lakh users) will have to release their compliance report every month. This report will contain information about the account reported by the user as well as any actions taken automatically by the company. In addition, details of the instructions issued by the Appeals Grievances Committee must also be provided.

We will continue to maintain transparency in our work,” WhatsApp said in its compliance report. The company also said that we have given users the freedom to block contacts and report any problematic content. They will be able to block any contact in the app itself. You can also report content. WhatsApp said that we fully care about our users’ comments and are focused on preventing any kind of misinformation and enhancing cybersecurity and election integrity.
Even before that, in August, the company banned 84.58 thousand accounts on WhatsApp, of which 16.61 thousand accounts were blocked by the company taking its own notice. Many new features have recently been added to WhatsApp, and one of them is the custom menu. Through this feature, users can create a separate list for their favorite contacts and groups. Users will not face any problem in contacting them.
