Colt Technology Services Rivada Space Networks is collaborating with Rivada Space Networks to provide what they say will be a unique, next-generation satellite communications network in low Earth orbit (LEO) with the flexibility and performance to drive innovation and digital transformation.
Low latency in Rivada A point-to-point communication network of 600 LEO satellitescalled Outernet, combines inter-satellite laser links with on-board processing that provides routing and switching capabilities to create an optical mesh network in space.
Said to be able to combine the speed of fiber with the reach of satellites, the global data constellation will use satellite-to-satellite laser links to provide an ultra-secure, low-latency network.
Such an approach in orbital networks, where data remains in space from source to destination, creates pole-to-pole coverage, providing lower end-to-end latency than terrestrial fiber over similarly long distances, the companies said.
By routing traffic on a physically separate network, it provides a layer of defense for any organization that needs to securely share data between widely distributed locations. The network is scheduled to launch in 2025, and services are scheduled to begin in 2026.
The partnership will see Colt leverage the Rivada Outernet to provide flexibility for high-quality voice, video and data services and a new level of cybersecurity for organizations that require secure infrastructure, such as banking and financial services.
Outernet’s connectivity capabilities aim to enhance network performance and enable true digital transformation and new business opportunities with multi-gigabyte full-duplex performance, as well as worldwide reach.
Colt said the growing demand by organizations to move large amounts of data securely and quickly around the world is putting existing digital infrastructure under greater pressure than ever before, requiring organizations to look to new networking technologies.
“Our goal is to provide fast, secure, high-performance solutions powered by our resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure with the Colt customer experience,” said Paddy Beyer, Chief Operating Officer at Colt Technology Services. “The opportunities to leverage this global B2B access solution are enormous, and we are very excited about this partnership.”
Declan Ganley, CEO of Rivada Space Networks, said: “We are delighted to be working with a dynamic company like Colt Technology Services to develop space solutions to support digital transformation.
“In the digital economy, communications security and resilience are becoming increasingly important,” he said. “The Outernet network allows satellites to move beyond their traditional ‘fill-in-the-gap’ role, and as a fully interconnected orbital network that provides highly secure connectivity anywhere on the planet, it is quickly becoming the infrastructure of choice for secure data communications.”
