Google Pixel phones include a call screen feature that could soon be upgraded with new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, according to a report. The Mountain View-based tech giant is reportedly working on an “AI Responses” feature that will generate intelligent responses based on what the caller said, instead of the standard responses seen in the current version of the call screen. The feature is currently under development, so it won’t be visible in the latest version of the phone app on Pixel devices, and could be rolled out to the company’s devices in the future.
Google Pixel is reportedly getting AI responses in the call screen
The Call Screen feature in the Phone app on Pixel smartphones allows users to set Google Assistant to receive incoming calls and ask why the call is on. It is available in select regions (not India) and works on all Pixel smartphones.
Last year, Google added a contextual replies feature to Call Screen, which allowed users to answer the caller if they didn’t want to answer a call. For example, if the call screen feature tells a user that they are receiving an incoming call about an appointment at a doctor’s office, users can choose to confirm or decline the appointment and the on-device assistant can notify the caller of the same.
Although useful in certain scenarios, this feature is very limited in the range of responses a user can send, and does not work if the caller’s response is very complex. Now, Android Authority APK tearing It reveals that the company is working on improving contextual responses using “AI responses.”
Post He says The company may use artificial intelligence to process the caller’s response and show the user more relevant responses. Based on the image, AI Responses is described as a “call assistant that suggests new AI-powered smart responses based on the caller’s call screen responses.”
9to5Google too I dug in The phone app for your Pixel smartphone to find more evidence of this feature. The post found strings of code indicating that the AI-generated responses were internally called “dobby.” Another string of code reportedly revealed that the feature would be powered by “dobby LLM.”
This is believed to be the codename for Gemini Nano which is already powering some of the AI features in the Google Pixel 9 series. However, the company may also be using a separate large language model to power the feature. Currently, Google has not shared any information about when AI responses in the call screen might be released.
